CSC RACING PRODUCTS INC.
The History of the Company

Since 1974, CSC Racing Products, then known as Canadian Stock Car Products, has developed well beyond the roots of the original stock car business that Bill Salter bought in the early seventies. Today, a walk through their shop reveals a tremendous breadth of motorsport activity. Although stock cars were at the core of the original business, they must now rub shoulders with everything from Cobra Kit cars to vintage racers, from Trans-Am development projects to GT's - even racing boats and enclosed trailer manufacturing projects appear on the shop floor!

1974 saw the company make its first foray into the broader world of road-racing. Honda Canada selected CSC to build the roll cages for the new showroom-stock Honda/BF Goodrich (later Honda/Michelin) racing series. CSC continued to build up to 75 Honda cages a year, until the series ended in the early 1990's. The innovative - and very successful - Honda/Michelin series was quickly accompanied by other, similar road-racing series such as the General Motors/Players Challenge, Rothmans/Porsche Turbo Cup, Firestone Firehawk, and many others. At one Toronto lndy, 29 of the 33 IROC Camaros on the grid had been prepared with roll cages from CSC!

Interestingly, in 2004 Honda/Michelin came back with a Honda Civic series and once again selected CSC Racing Products as their sole cage kit supplier. 35 cages were ordered for Eastern Canada.

Bill's family started to join the business in the late 1970's when son-in-law Ralph de Winter came aboard. Bill Salter Jr. joined in 1980 followed by daughter Jennifer de Winter in 1987. With Bill Salter Sr.'s retirement in November of 2000 responsibilities are now shared with Ralph handling engineering, product development and technical sales, Bill Jr. managing production and shipping/receiving, while Jennifer is now the General Manager looking after administration, advertising, internet and retail sales.

With a move in 1981 to the Concord shop, Bill took the opportunity to re-tune the name of the business to its current form - CSC Racing Products Inc. - in order to better reflect the firm's more extensive racing involvement.

This move expanded the retail store, complementing the growing manufacturing business. Today, racing safety products are stocked by such manufacturers as Bell, Rebco, AFCO, Wilwood, Griffin, Speedway Bodies, Kirkey, Leaf, and Bicknell's. In fact, everything except engines, tires and fuel are available to local racers at this one-stop race shop.

One of CSC's more unusual activities is their involvement in the stunt industry. All of the vehicles that are jumped, rolled, crashed, driven through walls, over cliffs, and otherwise demolished in television or movies filmed in Toronto and Montreal need to be prepared with roll cages, fuel cells, seats, seat belts, and other state-of-the-art safety equipment to protect the stunt drivers from injury. CSC Racing Products has developed into the number one source for all of this specialized gear and fabrication.

Another interesting business that CSC has developed is the design and fabrication of all of the chassis and suspension components for JOHNEX III. CSC's relationship with the Cobra Kit Car business began over a decade ago with the design of a tubular chassis for the 427 Cobra replica for then owner Steve Dalnoki. CSC now produces five chassis lines and continue to advance the engineering of previously developed products.

CSC designed and fabricated the chassis for the Cobra Daytona Coupe. This car has been featured extensively in Kit Car Magazine, and won several prestigious US kit-car awards for excellence of design and fabrication.

CSC has also done some development work on the classic Cheetah.

Since the first computer arrived at CSC in 1983, this technology has had a tremendous impact on their business. The 427 chassis was designed before computer aided design existed, and in fact the suspension geometry was worked out - full scale - in chalk on the shop floor! Now, every manufacturing design detail is carefully developed and perfected in AutoCAD 2000® before fabrication commences. The Cheetah and Daytona Coupe chassis' were designed on-screen, as was the tubular CSC Trans-Am chassis and the American Race Trucks tubular chassis.

A well-known Ontario racing tradition, that was started over a decade ago, is the spring CSC Racer's Exchange and Open House, held on a Saturday near Easter. It attracts hundreds of Canadian racers wanting to buy parts. CSC offers free donuts and coffee in their showroom - along with some very healthy discounts. Truly an event not to be missed...

With six full-time fabricators working in the shop, a chassis-a-day production rate is not uncommon. Plus, of course, all the cage kits and other custom steel items CSC offers. Every day of the week, transport trucks back up to the loading dock to take those items - plus interior sheet metal kits, frame kits, and other items - to customers across the length and breadth of North America. Interestingly, CSC ships almost as much into the state of Texas as they ship to the whole of Canada. CSC has even shipped a container of cage kits, seat mount kits and interior sheet metal kits to Switzerland for Stock Car use.

They hit the big times in November of 2002 when they made it onto the cover of Circle Track Magazine. Anyone in Stock Car racing knows that this is a premier magazine for stock car racing - CSC considers it an honour that the publishers of this fine magazine and Stock Car Racing magazine would choose their product for this project. The car on the cover has a CSC cage kit and seat mount kit installed...and it's a winner.

With a move to Newmarket, Ontario in 1998 CSC now occupies 10,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space with a large retail facility to complement the chassis/cage kit business. The business is located at 125 Harry Walker Parkway North, one light west of 404 highway north of Davis Dr. in Newmarket, Ontario. If it was any closer to the 404 highway...it would require a drive thru.

From a small beginning, CSC has become an international success, and a very substantial business, which is only appropriate. Family values, top quality products, and outstanding customer service have long been recognized as the keys to success!
